Mel Gibson Wraps Filming on The Resurrection of the Christ and Confirms Release Dates

Director Mel Gibson officially wrapped filming on "The Resurrection of the Christ," the highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 film, "The Passion of the Christ." Production on this two-part epic concluded ahead of schedule after 134 days of filming across various locations in Italy. The filmmaker stated that he brought the story to the big screen exactly as he envisioned it, generating great anticipation among followers.

Despite wrapping filming, a change was announced for the theatrical releases under the distribution of Lionsgate and IDC in Latin America. Part One was postponed by a few months and will premiere on May 6, 2027, while Part Two was scheduled for May 25, 2028. Both productions will hit theaters in coordination with the Christian holiday of Ascension Day.

The plot of this sequel will focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, continuing the events narrated in the first installment. The main cast features significant changes in the leading roles, with Jaakko Ohtonen portraying Jesus and Mariela Garriga in the role of Mary Magdalene. The cast is completed by the participation of figures such as Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett.

This cinematic project seeks to follow the impact of its predecessor, which remains one of the most successful independent productions in history with a global gross of $610 million. The script for the new installments was developed by Gibson himself in collaboration with writer Randall Wallace, consolidating a production effort of more than 20 years.
